                     San Diego Quilt Show 2010

               

                  I just had to talk about the caring women I met at

the Quilt Show. I was especially moved by the women who

were part of an organization that helps children with Cancer

and other life threatening diseases.

                    ConKerr Cancer-San Diego



Their slogan is Creating Smiles One Pillowcase at a time! 


Conkerr Cancer was started by a mother's love for her child that was stricken with Cancer.
Ryan Kerr battled cancer for six years before he lost his fight. Ryan’s mom
Cindy tried to make the hospital room more pleasant and
so she made pillowcases for him and other children
 in the oncology ward of the hospital.
       Ryan’s mother's promise to Ryan was that she would
continue
 making pillowcases for other children
   The Optimist club of Southern California is trying to
 bring awareness of Pediatric Cancer
 and to donate pillowcases
 that bring a small
 bit of joy in a sterile hospital setting.


This volunteer group has already given over five thousand

Pillowcases to Rady Childrens hospital.

                               from children,I was amazed at all the enjoyment
                               and gratitude coming from children receiving a

                  There is a specific way to make the pillowcases making
                  sure to wash the fabric in water only.  No soap or fabric
                  softners.The website has the instructions on making the
                  pillowcases.Please help if you can. 


This is a book that Ryans sister wrote . I was especially  moved by the picture of the child. 

 

                      I was made aware that Conkerr wishes that they  
                     can have enough pillowcases made for 
                     Christmas so they can put a toy in the pillowcases 
                     for each child. I especially know how the holidays
                     can be a rough time to get through.Focusing on 
                     doing some good for some children might be  
                     a positive way to heal your heart while helping
                     others. Just a thought!

Sitting at her tables working away was a woman

With a mission.I stopped and chatted about what the

Quilts of Valor organization was and eagerly she explained the needs of honoring the wounded men and women of the military. These volunteers make quilts to give comfort to our military soldiers and veterans. If your thinking what can I do to help our military who have protected our country?
 I think they would love to have your help.

As you can see Quilters are such busy people always helping others and creating wonderful quilts.  The San Diego Quilt Show had so much to look at. I didn't cover everything or I would be still writing away but I gave you a small glimpse of our Quilt Show. San Diego Quilt Show Part Two

                                       The San Diego Quilt Show 2010

This year at The San Diego Quilt Show I had more time to look
usually I am running around from booth to booth. but having
 two days  at the San Diego Quilt Show was a blessing for me. Wednesday I attended the Charity Preview and Friday I helped out a girlfriend in her booth. Both times I came away with an interesting time with fellow quilters.







I saw some ladies all dressed up in period costumes so of course I had to check
out what they were all about.

The ladies stood at their booth with a
quilt that they are busy recreating.



The quilt was originally



made by Dona de Dios Machado Alipas de Wrightington



which was the oldest known Quilt in California.















 The guild is called The Old Town Quilters Guild . These ladies meet every Wednesday in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. For more information contact Frances Mcmeeken at

This is the quilt that is a reproduction of a quilt that is at the San  Diego Historical Society.

  The Civil War Diary book is what a group of eight women used as inspiration for their
 eight separate quilts They exchanged blocks and worked on this project for a year.
I have scattered pictures of the quilts throughout my blog.
The book was by Rosemary Young and all the quilts were beautiful.The ladies
 expressed that it was great way to keep in touch with friends. Each lady created
 their own unique quilt using the Civil War book  along with their individual
choices of reproduction fabrics.
I am sure having to exchange blocks kept them on a deadline.  
 

 It sure inspires me to get some of my quilt projects done. The women suggest reading The Civil War Diary Quilt and The Civil war Love letter Quilt. If you love history I am sure you’ll enjoy these books.

San Diego Quilt Show 2010 Part One

Wednesday I was fortunate enough to have a girls night out and go to the preview of the San Diego Quilt Show. Normally when I have gone to the quilt show there is a lot of ladies and its hard to see everything. This time I went to the preview night which is a charity event . 100 per cent of the ticket price goes to TIP

Tip is a Trauma Intervention Program in San Diego. Tip has trained volunteers that respond to emergency traumatic situations in the San Diego community. They are called in by the police to help family members in traumatic situations within 20 minutes of a serious event. If you would like more information on this worthwhile program

Heart to Hand is a great booth that has
 lots of wools and wool applique patterns.
 I always look for Heart to Hand at Quilt Shows.

level that made you stay back from the
quilts. If your a quilter you know Don't
touch the Quilts!

Glorious Gardens Design Center

I finally had a chance to blog about a new plant nursery that my good friend Linda and I went to on a Friday road trip to the coast . This nursery is located in Encinitas California. Linda had heard about this nursery at her garden meeting. So Glorious Gardens Design Center here we come. I brought along my camera and thought maybe there might be something to take a photo of. First the size of this nursery is small it’s on a corner and you look over and think hum is it worth stopping.

I would say Yes!! Yes! And Yes! This nursery has a definite art feel to it . I could not believe the creativity in this small nursery. I especially like their plant color combinations. They use tumbled glass in such an interesting way.Tumbled glass is in the pathways and also in the plant containers. Glorious Gardens puts the same hue of color in their plants that is really striking.The colors of the succulents the way they display the plants is so unique. This is so worth checking out when your up in the coast of San Diego. Linda and I usually mix up driving to nurseries and quilt shops when were up in Leucadia and Encinitas. It is always fun to check out garden nursery’s but sometimes the bigger ones look the same. This is a gem!. The creativity in this spot is well worth the drive. I noticed how friendly the ladies were and their knowledge of their plant inventory was great.Glorious Gardens is skillful at packing alot a plants in a small area.
 Glorious Gardens and Design Center also specialize in Xeriscape and Drought Tolerant plants
This is a unique garden spot and if you are feeling like you have seen it all one garden nursery after another check this nursery out. You will walk away with a lot of great ideas not to mention plants .

Sew For a Cure at the Country Loft

Walk in to the Country Loft, 
Sew for a Cure is here!

Every year the Country Loft in La  Mesa has a great fundraiser for Sew for a Cure. It’s a great way for women to use their quilting,stitchery and rug hooking skills to help others. The Wednesday group of ladies works tirelessly making and fixing quilts for this once a year quilt show.  I don't want to forget to mention all the ladies at Country Loft that set up this quilt event. Breast Cancer has touched many women’s lives.  I can't believe how many of us know someone who has been affected by this disease. This quilt show is a way for many to help with a simple gift of their talent. I hope you are able to attend
and see how many women show their passion and their heart.

Another donation. Little log house with quilts.I asked my husband if he could donate something for this great cause. Jack had worked many hours on this log cabin but he gladly gave it away. I added the little quilts.

This is a kind of realization I made this year. In the past I have helped make group quilts for this cause. It was fun and it was nice to help out. This year I saw time after time women giving their beautiful quilts and the hours and hours of work for this cause . I was working on this Halloween stitchery and I loved loved loved it. But after seeing how giving and generous others were I donated it.So sometimes when you give it might be hard to do but follow through and it is well worth it.I know most of you know this lesson but maybe one person doesn't .This is not to make me sound like I need a pat on the back or anything but to say that I learned a valuable lesson. I felt so good to give it away. Even though at first I had to pry my fingers off it. I am laughing! 

 This has nothing to do with quilting except Morris makes me 
   laugh!  I wondered why I couldn't get my plants to grow in  there.

Morris loves to sit on my quilt table or any table and push anything
 that doesn't allow Morris to get a good cat stretch.Morris is  such a crazy character and a very mellow boy.
  Morris was a stray that adopted us and we have had more vet bills from him but he is worth it. His last vet trip was sleeping under a recliner and being sucked in it when my husband got up from a nap. He is fine now!!! But note to cat owners if you have a cat that naps in weird places.Look before you close up your recliner when getting up.
