San Diego Quilt show 2011 part two

               Monday morning and time for a quilt show and a good start to the week.


Saturday I started a post about the 2011 San Diego Quilt show . It was an interesting quilt show but for a Saturday it was not packed with the usual large crowds in the past. I have noticed at the quilt shows that the attendance is being affected by the economy. Well I hope you enjoy the variety of quilters in San Diego

Sept 11th

Where were you on Sept 11?


There are some pivotal days  in  your Life you remember When the man landed on the moon is one and Sept 11 to me is another.

I was still sleeping and my husband came into the bedroom and said a plane has hit the world trade building. I jumped up and as he went to work I felt this enormous feeling of sadness as I watched on T.V the events unfolded. As the second tower fell the unbelief that this was happening and all the brave rescue personnel going up to those tall building was heart breaking. I distinctly remember my daughter calling me in shock at what was happening. I remember telling her “Were going to War” My father had worked for the military during the Vietnam war repairing planes and traveling to bases in Vietnam.I guess that's why that was my first thought. I felt such sadness when I said it to her and knew there were going to be more losses of Life. The shock across America and the world at this horrible event was a time capsule of pain that is still with America. Today my prayers go out to the families and rescue personal who risked their lives and all the soldiers who are in harms way as we speak.

 was going to the San Diego Quilt show. My friends had gone different days and so I decided to jump in the SUV and head to down town. Even if I was by myself I was sure to see someone I knew. So here are some pictures more Monday...........

My new neighbor a barn owl

What sound made the hair on the back of my neck stand up?  This sound would scare even a mortician.  Last week I heard a horrible scream of some kind of animal . I didn’t have a clue, wondered what it was that was screaming in the middle of the night with a short screech and then silent. I knew it wasn't a coyote I started thinking could it be a mountain lion? We have a new list of help numbers to call and mountain lion sighting is on the list. The noise came from the park and it was such an incredibly loud screech I looked at Maulie and  promptly went to bed with the sheets over my head..Well tonight as I lay in the bedroom watching T.V I heard it out my bedroom window. I ran and got Jack and told him there is something in our back yard. Our back yard has a full array of large trees and I swear it sounded so close. He pointed the flashlight nothing.Hubby gave me that look like and the reason we are doing this is because......? I just wanted him to see or hear what I was hearing. Well a few minutes later it was back but in the front yard and he heard it this time. Jack promptly said it's an owl.I have heard hooting owls but this is worse then that tired expression nails on a chalkboard!
In defense of my being a little unsettled by this noise I am not a coward remember when I argued with a robber and asked him for his money while I was being robbed?Or when I got chased by a moose and how many ladies can say they got kissed by a whale!Oh and I stayed once in a real haunted hotel  in Arizona called the Copper Queen Hotel.( O.K. that  scared me)
Well I recalled reading in the Crest Sun about Barn owls that someone had set up a Barn owl box. Well I  found the article read some more and sure enough the neighbor is near me!That box is about two streets away. The barn owl lady mentioned that you never put a box near your window the sound is horrible. This lady is completely factual on that bit of information thank you very much.  I think they're hanging out near my home for hunting because of the big trees.They're good predators but with your windows open you almost jump out of your sheets! Hopefully they will catch some rodents at night but go to u tube and listen to one of their barn owl noises and tell me what you think. Is that not the worse sound in the middle of the night?

And the lights went out in Southern California and that would be me

Thursday I was having a nice day working on my Quilt watching Ellen when my whole house made a weird noise and all electricity went down. I thought maybe the air conditioner got overloaded since it’s been so hot! I went outside checked the fuse box No red showing on the switches. I looked at my neighbors homes and thought I wonder if they’re affected? It was so odd the sound it made as it went down. I kept thinking this is strange when Hubby came through the door with a sandwich. He told he got the last sandwich at a sandwich shop. Jack seemed kind of satisfied with his sandwich in a odd guy way. It seems the man behind him spent five minutes deciding what kind he wanted and went to pay with a debit card and the electricity had shut off. Jack’s moral of the story is don’t take a lot of time being fussy or maybe you won’t get to eat!


In California you have to understand when we have rain it’s a big deal the news goes crazy! Earthquakes were used to sort of .Well you can imagine we were blacked out in all of San Diego County parts of Orange County and even Mexico and Arizona over five million people! This was a historic day all because one man made a mistake in Arizona at work. San Onofre nuclear plant shut down to protect itself that was scary. Megan was feeding me info from her computer and the first thoughts it was a terrorist attack. Because of Sept 11 this time of year it’s a worry in America. I didn’t think it was that. My daughter fed us more information from Riverside county which was not affected til my phone went dead!

Well thank God for a little radio we found I listened to all the people calling in, the news conferences and where there was mandatory boiling of water in certain cities and felt very safe in Crest. All schools are closed in San Diego county. One thing about Californians is some people don’t realize at a signal light if the lights are out a blinking red light means it’s a four way stop. Really? It was carmaggedden on the freeways with millions going home. The gas stations had no electricity so of you were low in gas it was scary. The trolleys stopped suddenly and you had to walk home. People were trapped in elevators. Our emergency system kicked in and all police and firefighters were at work.

Because we had the wildfires in 2003 we had candles kerosene lanterns flashlights. I could hear neighbors getting their generators going. So Hubby and I sat out side saw the beautiful sky and watched satellites orbit by. Maulie barked at who ever was walking by in the dirt road and Morris lay at our feet. We had sandwiches for dinner . I jumped up to get a drink and Maulie ate the rest of my sandwich. Lol.

As the reports from  people came in most San Diego County people once they got home were enjoying the evening. I really was proud of this man on the radio and how he was a voice on what was going on . I was proud of our county. This is what our country did  decades ago  listen to radio's to get information not a bad idea.This was suppose to last a couple days but I am happy to say my lights came on in the middle of the night. I lay in bed using my ipod by then hearing people calling in when they got lights.It was fun and finally I dozed off.So this morning I made  some coffee and  started a new day. The moral of the story is when you get lemons make lemonade oh and it’s always nice to have a full tummy.

 Country Loft   

 I have been a hermit again working on the grandbaby’s stocking and trying to stay out of the heat. It is down right oppressive!. So tonight as I gathered my quilt supplies it seem to take forever. Finally I was off to class. There was an assortment of different blocks to pick to quilt tonight so I thought I would challenge myself and do some paper piecing. Boy talk about being in a different world. It was challenging for me between putting fabric on one side sewing on paper and flipping the fabric back and forth and all the steps I was having to concentrate the whole evening. But I am happy to say I am starting to understand what I am doing.One thing I noticed that when you haven't quilted in a while I had to get use to my rulers again and of course my rotary cutter was dull. I needed a bigger table mat for cutting. Oh and for some reason I have a hard time not spreading my supplies all over the place. Besides that I was organized. Lol!


My fellow classmate was doing a great job!



  Donna was a patient teacher with us all and the handouts explained a lot where the book didn’t. I am on the second block of paper piecing. I would have finished the second block but I ran out of time. ! The hobo quilt has appliqué blocks paper piecing and just piecing .

 Donna made us Hobo stew it was great! and so between cutting, sewing and working away the evening went super fast. Apparently there are stories in the book about Hobo’s so we listened and sewed away. I am glad I got out of the house tonight and you can see by the pictures we were all busy!

HoBo Quilt

                                 During the depression millions were out of work and rode the
                                 rails.These designs were carved in peoples fences or written on a barn
                                 to convey to the next Hobo what to look out for.
                                 

I have images of Hobo's sitting in the back of a freight car sewing blocks on and chatting about the stops along the way. I saw these quilt blocks and fell in love with the simple squares. So I ran over to Country Loft and signed up for the once a month class. My hubby collects Trains and so what better quilt then a hobo quilt. There is something about working on individual blocks that I find fun and relaxing. I know I have too many projects but one more won’t hurt. I ordered the book on line and I am so looking forward to the Wednesday class.
